SEE THIS HOUSE: Saturated Eclectic Upper West Side Apartment

Starting off this week with something bold and vibrant. Interior designer, Nina Barnieh-Blair, is not afraid of designing with color. From growing up in Kumasi, Ghana to moving to England at the age of seven, Nina found comfort at her grandmother’s family compound. It was her happy place that turned into her daily inspiration for her work today. Take a look inside her eclectic-style Upper West Side apartment.

Nina, the founder of Nina B Design, has spent nearly a decade honing her “modern eclectic style.” It combines classic modern furnishings with traditional African textiles and pottery. She mixes Danish modern-inspired chairs with Ashanti stools and Zulu baskets in her Upper West Side apartment, creating a unique and inviting space that reflects her global perspective.

Throughout the apartment, you can see hints of Nina’s Ghanaian heritage and travels around the world. She is now based in New York City. Nina has a keen eye for blending colors, textures, and patterns to create spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Her passion for African textiles and pottery can be seen in the accent pillows and pottery scattered throughout her home, while her husband’s Scandinavian roots can be seen in pieces like the Eero Saarinen Tulip side table.

However, Nina’s journey to becoming an established interior designer wasn’t easy. Her parents discouraged her from pursuing a career in the arts. Instead, she earned a business degree and spent ten years working in public relations in London. She later realized her passion for design and decided to pursue it full-time after renovating her parents’ home.

The saturated colors are refreshing. Her apartment has the perfect balance of modern styles and unique pieces that still feel warm and personal. I scrolled through her other design work in her portfolio. She creates homes that feel both familiar and new by blending traditional and eclectic styles, reflecting the rich diversity of our world. I always love it when designers incorporate their heritage into their work.
