History of Annapolis, Maryland
Annapolis is the capital of Maryland. It is located halfway between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. It lies roughly two miles from the mouth of the Severn River on the Chesapeake Bay. Puritan exiles from Virginia founded Annapolis in 1649. The town was known as Providence and Anne Arundel Town until being renamed Annapolis in 1694 in honor of Princess Anne. Annapolis hosted several significant events, including Congress meetings and Washington’s departure from command of the Continental Army in 1783.
