Choosing Paint Colors

At the base of every living room is a paint color that characterizes it and sets the tone. Be conscious when selecting living room wall colors by picking one that will compliment the furniture and decor. Most shades of white, including off-white, are timeless colors to choose from. They bring brightness to a room, while also pairing well with almost every other color you choose for accents and decor. Pay attention to any undertones and how the paint reflects in the light. I always swatch samples on the wall and look at them at different times throughout the day. It is a smart way to achieve your desired look. Some of my favorite white paint colors from Benjamin Moore are Dove White and Simple White. If you’re looking to achieve a moody black-and-white monochromatic look then use charcoal paint colors like Wrought Iron and Graphite.

Design Tip – Adding Textures

When you have a simple color scheme, adding texture to decor will add more flare and life to a room. It is a great way to maintain the black-and-white color scheme while adding more character to the living room. You can add unique living room wall colors and textures. Or even a black and white rug is a simple way to add texture to the room while still keeping the design intact. You can also incorporate different materials from different time eras for a retro effect. I love sourcing home decor from estate sales and flea markets. Also this doesn’t just apply to living rooms, adds texture to any monochromatic space like a bathroom or bedroom.

Design Tip – Styling Furniture

Here is where things can get tricky, while the wall colors are the base, the furniture should bring the room together. Making sure the furniture pairs well is a must to executing this monochromatic style. Making sure to add contrast with the texture and the shades of hue used, without it being too much. Finding the balance between the furniture colors and textures is what will really execute the design style.

The Dangers of Monochrome in Interior Design

There are people that prefer neutral color tones. As a result, black and white is a popular color combination in interior design. However, the classic color palette isn’t always executed properly. There are many things that can go wrong including lack of visual contrast. When a design doesn’t have enough balance or a focal point the room can seem dull or boring. There’s also limited flexibility. A monochrome design can make it difficult to make significant changes later on. That’s why if you are to choose a monochromatic color scheme then black and white is the safest bet. Where as blue, green, red, etc. can become outdated after a few years.

Here’s some inspiration for vibrant monochromatic rooms Personally I love a pop of color every now and then, especially when it is different shades of the same hue like greens or blues. Whether you love to live in color or like to stick with classic neutrals, see this black-and-white living room to achieve that monochromatic look effortlessly.
